Substation Operator – Achwa

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is advertising for a Substation Operator to be based at its Achwa substation. Wholly owned by the Ugandan Government, UETCL operates the national High Voltage Transmission Grid and holds licences in System Operation, Bulk Power Supply, Power Import and Export, and Optic Fibre infrastructure — all in pursuit of becoming the leading electricity transmission company in Eastern Africa.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor switchboard instruments to identify disturbances and confirm that all equipment operates within normal parameters.
• Perform scheduled inspections and maintenance on transformers, circuit breakers, and auxiliary supply systems.
• Observe and document the operational performance of transformers and switchgear, recording any irregularities detected.
• Carry out switching operations as directed by the National Control Center and maintain clear communication with the control team.
• Manage emergency responses and unplanned outages, including rerouting power through alternative circuits as required.
• Undertake monthly energy meter readings and ensure data accuracy in all operational logs.
• Uphold high housekeeping standards throughout the substation facility.

Requirements

• Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in power system operation and/or maintenance.
• Willingness to be deployed to any of UETCL’s substation locations across Uganda.
• Ability to work extended hours and adapt to shift-based or on-call arrangements.
• Person of unquestionable integrity who is motivated, innovative, and proactive.
• Strong team orientation and commitment to achieving organisational goals.
