Substation Operator – Bujagali

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the role of Substation Operator at the Bujagali substation. A fully government-owned utility, UETCL manages Uganda’s High Voltage Transmission Grid, operates as System Operator, handles Bulk Power Supply, conducts Power Import and Export, and oversees the national Optic Fibre network — working towards becoming Eastern Africa’s leading electricity transmission company.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor switchboard instruments and gauges to detect disturbances and verify correct equipment functioning.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, and auxiliary supply systems.
• Track and document the performance of transformers and switchgear, noting any anomalies.
• Execute switching operations in accordance with instructions issued by the National Control Center.
• Respond to system emergencies and power outages by interrupting current flow and switching to alternate circuits as required.
• Carry out monthly energy meter readings and maintain accurate operational records.
• Maintain orderly and clean conditions within the substation at all times.

Requirements

• Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience in power system operation and maintenance.
• Flexibility to work at any UETCL substation site across Uganda when required.
• Capacity to work long hours beyond the standard schedule as operational needs arise.
• High personal integrity, self-motivation, innovation, and a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
• Effective team player with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to excellence.
