Substation Operator – Nkenda (kasese)

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is recruiting a Substation Operator to join the team at its Nkenda substation in Kasese. As a government-owned company with operational licences covering System Operation, High Voltage Transmission, Bulk Power Supply, Power Import and Export, and Optic Fibre infrastructure, UETCL is at the heart of Uganda’s energy sector and its ambitions for regional energy leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor switchboard instruments and gauges to detect disturbances and verify correct equipment functioning.
• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, and auxiliary supply systems.
• Track and document the performance of transformers and switchgear, noting any anomalies.
• Execute switching operations in accordance with instructions issued by the National Control Center.
• Respond to system emergencies and power outages by interrupting current flow and switching to alternate circuits as required.
• Carry out monthly energy meter readings and maintain accurate operational records.
• Maintain orderly and clean conditions within the substation at all times.

Requirements

• Ordinary Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a recognised institution.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience in power system operation and maintenance.
• Flexibility to work at any UETCL substation site across Uganda when required.
• Capacity to work long hours beyond the standard schedule as operational needs arise.
• High personal integrity, self-motivation, innovation, and a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
• Effective team player with a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to excellence.
