Know what a transaction really costs before you tap. Pick MTN MoMo or Airtel Money, enter an amount, and see the exact withdrawal or send fee — including the 0.5% withdrawal tax. For example, withdrawing USh 100,000 on MTN costs USh 1,925 in fees plus USh 500 tax — USh 2,425 in total.
How Mobile Money charges work
Two things can be charged on a Mobile Money transaction: the provider fee (a fixed amount per band, set by MTN or Airtel) and, on withdrawals only, the 0.5% government tax. Sending money carries just the provider fee. When you withdraw, your wallet is debited the cash you take plus the fee plus the tax:
Withdrawal total = Amount + Agent fee + 0.5% tax

Tips to pay less in charges
- • Withdraw fewer, larger amounts instead of many small ones — the fee jumps at each band.
- • Pay merchants directly with Pay (merchant) or MoMoPay where possible; it is often cheaper than withdrawing cash first.
- • Keep money in your wallet to pay bills, airtime and goods so you avoid the 0.5% withdrawal tax altogether.
- • Compare both networks above — for big sends, Airtel's flat fee can be the cheaper option.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to withdraw money on MTN MoMo?
The agent withdrawal fee depends on the amount — for example UGX 700 on 10,000, UGX 1,925 on 100,000 and UGX 7,000 on 500,000. On top of the fee you also pay a 0.5% government withdrawal tax. Use the calculator above for the exact total on any amount.
What is the 0.5% mobile money tax?
It is a government excise duty of 0.5% charged on every withdrawal, calculated on the amount you take out. Sending money is not taxed — the 0.5% only applies to cash-outs.
Is it cheaper to send on MTN or Airtel?
Airtel Money has flatter send fees (capped at UGX 1,000), while MTN rises to UGX 1,500–2,000 on large transfers. For agent withdrawals the two are similar up to UGX 1,000,000; above that Airtel caps the fee at UGX 12,500 while MTN goes higher. Compare both using the toggle above.
Are MoMo withdrawal fees and the tax deducted separately?
Yes. When you withdraw, your wallet is debited the cash amount, plus the agent fee, plus the 0.5% tax. The calculator shows each line so you know the full amount leaving your balance.
What are the transaction limits?
The maximum single transaction is USh 5,000,000 and the maximum wallet balance is USh 20,000,000 on both networks. Larger payments must be split into several transactions.
Do these charges apply to ATM or bank withdrawals?
The rates here are for standard agent cash-outs and person-to-person transfers. Withdrawing at an ATM or moving money to a bank account can carry different fees set by the bank or network.
