Lycamobile Uganda has an opening for a Database Administrator in Kampala, responsible for the availability, security and performance of its production databases.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor database health, server resources and performance, and handle routine maintenance, indexing, log management and query optimisation
- Automate and monitor backups, test restorations regularly, keep secure offsite backups and implement disaster recovery plans
- Configure and maintain replication, clustering, synchronisation and failover across primary and secondary sites
- Manage database users, roles, permissions, authentication, encryption, security patches and audit logs
- Identify and resolve slow queries, locks, deadlocks and connection issues
- Assist developers with database design, SQL optimisation, indexing and Redis caching
- Maintain documentation, monitor alerts and provide on-call support in critical incidents
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field
- At least 3–5 years of practical experience managing production databases
- Hands-on experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis and Microsoft SQL Server
- Strong knowledge of backup, recovery, replication, performance tuning and security
- Experience with Linux and Windows Server, and scripting in Bash, PowerShell or Python
- Certification in Microsoft Azure Database Administration, PostgreSQL or MySQL; experience with AWS RDS, Azure SQL or Google Cloud SQL; knowledge of Docker, Kubernetes and monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Zabbix and Percona PMM
- Ability to handle multiple incidents under pressure, with strong attention to detail and documentation skills
